Yes, cholesterol protects your cells, maintains your brainpower, helps make hormones and vitamins, and on, and on, and on. But under certain circumstances, it can block your arteries and trigger — Oh no! — a heart attack. It’s all in the lipoproteins. LDLs are the most common fat-and-protein particles in your body. Like their parents, the VLDLs and their cousins the IDLs, LDLs are soft enough to squeeze between the cells of your blood vessel walls, dragging cholesterol into your coronary arteries (the blood vessels leading away from your heart). Once inside an artery, cholesterol particles may get caught on the infinite number of chinks in the artery wall. Stuck in place, the cholesterol now snags other particles floating by, eventually creating deposits called plaque. In time, the plaque on the artery wall may grow thick enough to block the flow of blood through the blood vessel, or a piece of plaque may break off, triggering the formation of a blood clot that can also block the artery. Either way, the sequence is called a heart attack. As a general rule, heart docs assume that the more cholesterol you have floating through your bloodstream — especially the “bad” LDL cholesterol — the higher your risk for plaque build-up in your arteries and the higher your risk of a heart attack. In other words, to lower your risk of heart attack, you must lower your cholesterol, particularly those “bad” LDLs. But this simple equation may not be the solution for every human body. In December 2007, the results from a clinical trial of the new drug ezetimibe (Zetia) showed that taking the medicine, either alone or in combination with the statin drug simvastatin (Zocor), definitely lowered “bad” cholesterol, but also hastened the buildup of arterial plaque for some of the people in the trial. In other words, simply lowering their LDLs did not protect these people from a heart attack. Something else, such as an individual tendency to pile up arterial plaque, also seemed to be at work. (Conversely, people with high cholesterol but clear arteries may have the opposite attribute — an inherent ability to resist plaque — that explains the puzzle of why some people with high cholesterol do not have heart attacks.)

They’re simply groups of cells held together by electrical charges that keep the cells in place so that a piece of this page or a piece of your finger doesn’t go spinning off into space. Individual cells stay intact because they have a cell membrane, an outer skin that serves as neat and tidy packaging for the cell. One requirement for healthy cell membranes is — drumroll please — cholesterol. A whopping 90 percent of all the cholesterol in your body is in your cell membranes. The cholesterol protects the integrity of the cell membrane, helping to keep it flexible and strong. If you were to diet so stringently or use so many cholesterol-lowering drugs that your cholesterol level fell to zero (an impossibility by the way), your cell membranes would be very dry and easily torn. The stuff inside the cells would leak out, and cells would die all over the place. That would sort of put an end to the whole darn shootin’ match. Every healthy body cell needs some cholesterol, and so does every healthy brain. Atoms are the basic building blocks of elements — hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, and all their chemical cousins. Each atom carries the name of the element it represents (such as hydrogen). In addition, each atom has a shorthand symbol — call it a nickname — such as H for hydrogen. Sometimes, an atom’s shorthand name seems totally divorced from its full name. For example, lead atoms are called, well, lead atoms, but the symbol for a lead atom is Pb, from plumbum, the Latin word for lead. There are also elements and atoms named for human beings. For example, seaborgium is named for Nobel Laureate Glenn T. Seaborg; its shorthand symbol is Sg. Individual atoms form bonds with other atoms to create clusters of atoms called molecules. To write the name of a molecule — its formula — you write the symbols of the different atoms that the molecule contains and the number of each type of atom right after the symbol. For example, if I write H2O, the formula for the water molecule, you know immediately that a water molecule has two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. A body cell, the smallest independent unit of a living creature, is a collection of molecules. And you, wonderful reader, are a collection of cells.

Cardiovascular disease is now thought to be our Number 1 killer, as it is estimated that just under one million Americans die from cardiovascular related illnesses each year.

Reducing cholesterol levels, specifically LDL cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol that creates plaque in our arteries that can then block blood flow to the brain & heart), can greatly improve cardiovascular health.

The causes of higher than normal cholesterol are ingesting too many animal products, especially dairy products and red meat, and the liver itself producing too much cholesterol.

So how can one go about reducing cholesterol safely?

We’ll deal initially with factors that are not related to diet. These include getting some natural sunshine daily and employing a regular regime of exercise of around 30 to 45 minutes duration, such as walking, bike riding or swimming, to aid in strengthening your cardiovascular system as a whole. In addition, you should try to lose any excess pounds that you are carrying. Just burning off ten pounds can result in a definite lowering of your cholesterol. An excellent way to reduce the cholesterol we consume from actually entering our bloodstream is to eat a good quantity of fibrous whole grains. You should choose pastas and breads made from whole grains, and switch to brown rice. You should also try to eat a lot of nuts and soy foods, as well as sprouts and seaweed.

A Large-scale Heart Epidemic Is Coming Its Way In Asia!

Poverty is no longer a major problem for Asian countries following the dramatic economic development in recent years especially for China and India. Changes in diet coupled with increasingly inactive lifestyles have caused the rate of obesity to go up in several Asian countries. For example, the risk of obesity in India is highest in the 20% of the population that consumes 80% of visible dietary fat. The school surveys in Indian cities also show that 30% of adolescents from India’s higher economic groups are overweight.

A medical report released in 2004 had warned that cardiovascular disease (CVD) is set to pose a major threat to health and wealth in Asia, with smoking, increasing obesity, and rising levels of cholesterol and blood pressure.

The 5-year study was conducted the Asia Pacific Cohort Studies Collaboration, combining data from 659,000 participants in 46 studies in 9 countries – China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, New Zealand and Australia. The results have indicated that a large-scale epidemic is poised to hit many countries in the region. During the study, evidence about the effects of the rapidly increasing rates of smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure, was found, especially in the urban areas.

Unless immediate steps are taken to implement prevention programs, the number of Asians who will die or be disabled by heart disease will be far greater than that ever seen in the West. Many of the victims will be in the prime of their working lives, since heart disease strikes at a much younger age in Asia than in the West.

The cost of heart disease in countries such as China will be vast. Not only will there be huge expenses associated with the treatment of heart attacks, but also the loss of earnings for victims and their families will have devastating economic consequences.

CVD includes heart, stroke and blood vessel disease and is the world’s leading killer, accounting for 16.7 million, or 20 percent, of total global deaths in 2003. Around 80 percent of CVD deaths took place in low- and middle-income countries, with the disease often striking during prime working years.

China’s stroke rates are 4 times higher than the Western world, and although its heart disease rates are still manageable at present, it is expected to rise rapidly, in particular in urban areas and for young people. If nothing is done to curb the high rates of diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking and cholesterol in coming years, the past CVD epidemics in Western world will be insignificance as compared to what is to be seen in Asia in the hear future.

It’s important for you, and your child to check constantly to see if their body is healthy and in homeostasis.

Let them Test Themselves, and you test Yourself.

A Different Picture Of Heart Disease

In Feb 2006, researchers reported that many women suffer from a fundamentally different heart disease from men and is easily missed from standard tests. Moreover, women do not seek treatment as early as men, and women’s hearts are smaller and their blood vessels are more easily damaged. Another possible reason is that the disease could manifest itself differently. As a result, women are less likely to survive heart attacks than men. Many women are still unaware that heart disease and stroke have emerged as the top killers of women worldwide.

The researchers found that for some women, instead of developing obvious blockages in the arteries supplying blood to the heart, plaque are accumulated more evenly inside the major arteries and in smaller blood vessels. In other cases, their arteries fail to expand properly or go into spasm, often at times of physical or emotional stress. These abnormalities are very common for younger women and these can be dangerous because they could trigger life-threatening heart attacks.

Instead of the classic crushing chest pain, sweating and shortness of breath, they often complain of vague symptoms such as fatigue, an upset in stomach, or pain in the jaw or shoulders. This certainly explain why some women suddenly have heart attacks even though their arteries look clear and in some cases, the doctors even send them home without treatment or refer them to psychiatrists. Even if they do get medical treatment, these women may not benefit from the standard drugs or therapies such as bypass surgery and angioplasty to reopen the clogged arteries. In many cases, these women whose arteries looked clear in normal tests have a significantly higher risk of having a heart attack or dying within four or five years. The abnormalities could be due to the fact that hormonal or genetic differences change how their arteries react. In America, there are as many as three million women may suffer from these conditions.

Despite of the new findings, many women do have the same kind of heart disease as men, and they do benefit from the same preventative measures and treatments that help men: a healthy diet and weight; regular exercise; and a lower blood pressure and cholesterol level. It is still unclear how best doctors can tackle such conditions, but the new findings do provide important understanding of a major health problem, and it also alerts both women and their doctors about the alternative manifestations of the disease.

What is Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a soft, waxy, fat-like material that is made by the liver. Cholesterol serves many vital functions, and is part of every cell in the body. Our bodies require cholesterol to maintain healthy cell walls, make hormones, make vitamin D, and to make bile acids.

The food we eat can also play a big part in the amount of cholesterol in our bodies. If we eat an excess of food containing saturated fat, the liver will produce more cholesterol than the body needs. Our bodies will also absorb cholesterol directly from food that contains cholesterol.

In nature cholesterol is only found in animal based foods, but some food processing can cause other foods to have cholesterol as well. Foods fried in animal fat or tropical oils, have also been found to contain cholesterol. Saturated fat is also found primarily in animal based foods.

Cholesterol on its own can not dissolve in the blood. Tiny particles called lipoproteins deliver cholesterol to and from the blood cells. There are two lipoproteins that work with cholesterol, low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and high-density lipoproteins (HDL).

LDL cholesterol, often referred to as “Bad” cholesterol, carries cholesterol in the blood stream to the tissues, where it can be used or stored by the body. The reason this type of cholesterol is referred to as “Bad” is that this is the cholesterol that can build-up and clog arteries. This is what happens when there is too much LDL in the body.

HDL cholesterol, often referred to as “Good” cholesterol, carries cholesterol in the blood stream from the tissues to the liver. The liver then expels this cholesterol from the body. A high HDL level will tend to protect against heart attack and stroke.

There are other factors that can affect your blood cholesterol levels. Some of these factors include being overweight, lack of exercise, inherited health traits, increased age, and gender. Women after menopause tend to have higher cholesterol than before menopause. Women also tend to have a higher HDL level throughout there lives than men. This may help to explain why women under the age of 80 usually experience lower rates of heart disease and stroke than men.

According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), a high cholesterol level is considered to be over 200 mg/dL for your total cholesterol. Total cholesterol is calculated as (LDL + HDL). This however, is not the only figure that you should be concerned about. You also need to have a HDL level greater than or equal to 45 mg/dL, to reduce your risk of heart disease.

Desirable: less than 200 mg/dL

Borderline: 200-239 mg/dL

High: 240 mg/dL or higher

HDL Cholesterol Levels

Desirable: 45 mg/dL or higher
